Incredible Swimming Pool Pump
Variable Speed Pool Pumps – The Future of Swimming Pools
By choosing the proper pump, Swimming pool owners can expect savings of at least $400/year.
Very few swimming pool owners understand the energy consumption of their very own swimming pool pump. In fact, the pool pump is probably one of the largest energy demanding appliances they have on their property. That’s because most pool and spa pumps use very energy friendly single stage motors that run at 1HP and up. In the past, energy supply has been plentiful and energy reducing efforts have not been considered – a norm in the swimming pool industry.
So how in-efficient is my pool pump? A study recently found that to operate California’s 1.2 million pools and spas requires about the same output as one nuclear power or two conventional energy plants (study by Davis Energy Group for Pacific Gas & Electric – 2004). Simply consider ALL the swimming pools across the U.S., and the power used by these family pools. Arizona also has an incredible abundance of residential pools per home, which is why AZ pool companies are switching to these incredible new pumps.
The solution? Pumps that work smarter, not harder.
In the past few years, the swimming pool industry has seen some dramatic upgrades involving pool and spa pumps and motors. The newest in electricity savings has come from the introduction of the revolutionary variable drive, variable speed swimming pool pump. These new pool and spa pumps are using permanent magnet motors, which have been designed to run with less power. Permanent magnet motors, usually used in hybrid cars, provide about 30% electricity savings over standard induction motors. By simply programming the pump to work at the least required speed for each pool task (heating, cleaning, filtration, waterfalls, etc.) power reduction can be as much as 90%!
By operating a pool pump at its minimum speed needed to complete a task, it will dramatically reduce the energy consumed (only because it requires less energy to move water slowly than rapidly). Did you know? The simple reduction of speed by 1/2 can reduce the energy necessary to 1/8 – to perform the same pool task. Simply put, these new pumps allow the swimming pool owner to program and “dial in” the pump speed to achieve the minimum electricity use.
Energy Savings of $620 to $1,350
According to Pentair Pool and Spa, their IntelliFlo® and IntelliPro™ variable drive pumps routinely reduce energy use up to ninety percent, depending on the models and circumstances for average savings of $620 to $1,350 annually. Based on normal pool and spa usage over one to three years, many pool owners are replacing their old pumps because a new variable drive pump will actually pay for itself.
Power delivery charges are even higher in Arizona, and with Phoenix’s huge pool and spa count, this new pump has become an absolute necessity for pool companies in Phoenix when designing new swimming pools. The recent revolution to energy efficient products makes switching to a GREEN industry pool pump even more desirable in Arizona.
Specific Examples of how IntelliFlo pumps by Pentair can be used in your pool and landscape:
This pump can be used for an in-floor cleaning system pump, and it’s set at 3050 RPM, which is approximately a two HP pump. The same pool pump can be dialed down to a half HP pool pump to circulate & clean the water of the swimming pool. With a quick push of a button (and some pool remote automation), this same pump can be used for spa boosters in both a slow AND faster speed mode!) Another common use is the setting to control the flow volume of a waterfall or pool water feature (it is also known to be used by high end residential Phoenix landscaping companies to control the sound & flow of custom landscape waterfalls & ponds). The IntelliFlo Pentair pump can be set for two speeds (actually more) - giving the pool owner a low speed fountain for a quiet evening outside, or you can turn it faster for FULL EFFECT for a backyard party!
