Years ago when someone described a bathroom cabinet, or a medicine cabinet, it usually meant the same thing. This referred to a little cabinet that was hanging in the bathroom to hold aspirins, liniments and other medicinal needs.

Almost every bathroom had some type of small wall mounted metal shelving unit fastened on the wall. The usual location for this narrow, white enamel contraption was on the wall above the bathroom sink. The door was also made of white enameled metal and usually had a mirror attached. These cabinets were strictly utilitarian and there was no thought given to making the product appealing in any aesthetic sense.

Changes are Occurring

From these early days the look and use of a bathroom cabinet has changed dramatically. Now instead of a plain, drab addition to the most used room in the house suppliers offer consumers a line of bathroom storage fixtures that are practical, useful and very stylish.

Instead of white enamel, people can choose bathroom cabinets made from plastic, chrome, polished nickel, bamboo, or wicker to add interest and flair to any bath. There are dozens of chic looks now available that will let you turn your bathroom storage area into the room’s decorative focal point.

Understanding Vanity Bathroom Cabinets

When you look for a bathroom cabinet today, you can find a variety of great styles from which to choose. Usually this term refers to what is now known as a bathroom vanity. This cabinet houses the bathroom sink and faucets. The vanity counter top can be made of many different materials including marble or tile. There are usually 2 or more doors in this cabinet that allow access to an under-sink storage area, and a large number of these bathroom cabinets will have pull out drawers included.

Most people will pair the floor cabinet with a matching lighted vanity cabinet fixture that hangs above the sink. These can be wide and tall but are fairly shallow, and they hang flush against the wall. In addition to mirrored doors, these fixtures usually have interior shelving and mirrored doors.

Size and Style are Important

There are also a number of different bathroom cabinets that are available to today’s consumers. These storage units can be as small as a tiny box or tall, roomy structures that make wonderful places to house linens and other bath essentials. Space is often at a premium in many bathrooms and homeowners are appreciative when they are able to find a versatile and stylish bath cabinet capable of increasing the amount of storage space in the room.

American and European Style Bathroom Cabinets

There are two distinctively different styles of bathroom cabinets that include both American and European. The American cabinets generally rely on face-framing to complete the appearance. This means that the doors, mirrors, or some other type of covering frames the front of the shelves giving it a closed appearance. With a European style bath cabinet, the shelving is open and there are only minimal bits of trim noted along the shelving framework.

Bathroom Cabinet Selections

When looking for your perfect bathroom cabinets there are stock, custom, and modular units to consider. With a stock cabinet item, the piece has been produced for the mass market and these will only come in set sizes and styles. These are inexpensive but they are quite common with limited style availability.

Modular pieces have a wider selection of sizes and styles and can be combined with a number of other different pieces. For the connoisseur who wants a bathroom cabinet that stands out from the crowd a custom piece is the one to choose. Custom bathroom cabinets are made to your specifications and can be created in the size, style, color, and materials of your choice.
