We all own one or more flashlights and no one can deny that your life gear flashlight can really be a ‘saver’. On occasions when you have a car breakdown in the middle of the night or experience some natural disaster, your dynamo 5 led flashlight is off the shelf and ‘on duty’. It’s all too common for us to overlook this devices’ importance and I’m sure not a lot know who invented it or maybe how your shake led flashlight has been around since. How about we learn some little facts and get to know the flashlight better..

1.    Who is the flashlights’ inventor and when was it invented?

Interestingly, though torches can be considered as very simple devices, the first flashlight was only invented after the invention of the electric battery and the electric light. The 1890′s are considered to be the period it was invented. Some sources say that the founder of the Ever Ready company was the inventor however, the 1947 New Yorker Magazine stated that it wasJoshua Lionel Cowen who initially invented the flashlight and later sold it to Hubert as a novelty.

2.   Why is it called a ‘flashlight’?

When the first flashlight was invented, no steady electric current source was available      and users needed to press a button to literally  flash light at intervals. Thats the reason for the common name “flashlight”. It’s mainly in the US however that the name ‘flashlight’ is used, other countries especially in Europe refer to the device as a ‘torch’.

3. Is a lantern and a flashlight the same?

Basically, the difference comes with the area light is cast upon. Unlike lanterns that can light an entire room, flashlights are only able of lightling a small area. Another thing is that lanterns are made to be placed on flat places unlike flashlights that have to be held.

4. What are LED flashlights?

Invented in the late 1990’s LED or Light Emitting Diode torches don’t use batteries or bulbs and are more efficient and durable. You don’t have to worry about changing batteries and running out of power. This kind of light source uses semiconductor technology.

5. Can flashlight bulbs be replaced?

Yes. Its good to change your bulbs sometimes as long as you know the right kind and size to replace.

6. Where should batteries be kept?

When using gadgets such as cameras, it is usually advisable to remove your batteries when not in use. With your flashlight however, it would be best if  you keep them inside and ready to work at all times. Since you need your flashlight to be available during emergencies, you don’t want to have to start searching for them.
