How can you stain the standard bathroom cabinets like you'd find at Home Depot or Lowes….?

I’m trying to makeover or bathroom without doing a huge remodel. Something simple. In the bathroom we have those standard cheapish cabinets with the acrylic sink. Is there a proper way to stain the cabinets to possibly make them darker. They are a light – medium wood color I think it’s wood. Has anyone ever tried painting these kinds of cabinets. Also, anybody have any suggestions one the acrylic top. Do you think it’s possible to get some small tiles and thinset and decorate it. Any ideas?
